i have all of my SPEAKERS now, but no boxes yet. i just got 4x 12" hifonics subs a couple days ago and i'm breaking a pair in at low power on my home stereo in free air mode to dampen the bass a little as i have butthole neighbors. even in free air, i think they have much better bass than my previous paper cone 12" did. it was rated something like 93dB and my experience is that higher efficiency equals higher bass rolloff much of the time. many competition subs are rated down to the low 80s i've seen while even big PA speakers often extend only to 50Hz.
the subs are 88dB dual 4 ohm voice coils that i'll be running in series at 8 ohm with left & right pairs being run parallel back to 4 ohms and wired back in series at the sub amplifier for an 8 ohm load. i'm waiting for the 500w BASH class D sub amps to go on sale again soon as they've done the past 2 springs. they don't like 4 ohm loads. i don't have a sub amp yet, but if i needed to, i have another 50wpc onkyo HT receiver and a paradigm electronic crossover i could use or even bring a battery & one of my trailer amps. i'd like the plasma displays for DJing, but they're going in my trailer for sure.
my mains will be 4x pairs of 6 1/2" goldwoods with dayton (MB quart) titanium tweeters.
my main amplification will be my trusty class D 100wpc panasonic receiver in 4 channel mode with my mains rated at about 93dB at 8 ohms with 3.5khz passive crossovers. i went with a higher crossover frequency to stay away from my tweeter's resonance and to move as much air as possible with the woofers as well as take more power if i ever upgrade my amplification.
besides needing to build and/or buy boxes for my 4 subs and 4 mains, i'm also planning on building 6 foot tall posts with color changing LEDs in them. the battery powered x-mas strings i got from dealextreme are really cheap and look cool an inch or two behind translucent plastic. there are 30 LEDs per string and i'm thinking of using 3 to 5 of them per speaker stand. the front of the stands will have the plastic windows for the lights and inside of the back i plan on mounting hooks to wrap speaker cables around inside with batteries for the LEDs and power cords for the LED projectors i intend to rest on top of the speakers.
ideally, i want to get larger boxes built that i could use as weights for the speaker stands and for better extension, but i'm thinking i'll go with cheaper off the shelf boxes for now until i start getting some gigs.
if you've been to my street party bikes site recently, you've seen my 4 LED projectors and their patterns already.
finally, i already have my CD rig, a gemini CDM-3600. it's not the slick denons with effects & scratching that i want, but it has a nice warm sound and gets the job done. i can even do some crossfader start beat juggling with it, but it gets confused if crossfaded back & forth too fast. i mostly use the effect to add cuts to a mix.
what i need is cables, speaker boxes, a sub amp, speaker stands and a foldable table. for my rig with a shelf underneath for my amps. it won't be the loudest system, but it will sound tight & clean with it's tweeters mounted over the crowds' heads where they belong. it'll be a rig best suited for house parties & other small get togethers.
i just took a pic of all of my drivers that i need to host. i lost my old photo account because i just used it to dump pics as needed and didn't visit my account frequently enough apparently. i'll post a pic of my DJ gear in the fab lab even if it's "off topic" for bike systems, but i AM trying to plan a monster trailer rig using my DJ gear with the subs in the corners in an X pattern. i think i'll start off with the original bare minimum "deep thought" design i intended from the beginning just to get the gear rolling and the dust from settling any more.
i love the hifonics subs. they feel much more substantial than my 1st 2 120 watter 12" & 10" ones and the chrome trim looks great & would match my bike if i ever get them on a trailer. THAT design would be a more solid one built from the ground up & likely have some 68 spoke 20" wheels and a full custom straight pull hitch. one thing at a time. it's possible that my trailer & DJ rig could even merge, but i'd want at least another battery for the AC accessories.
